The U.S. Department of State Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships (S/GP), Concordia, and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Institute for Business in Society (IBiS) created the P3 Impact Award to recognize public-private partnerships (P3s) that are changing our world in the most impactful of ways.
DREAMS PARTNERSHIP
DREAMS – which stands for Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe Women – is a partnership focused on reducing HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women in 10 sub-Saharan African countries: eSwatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, along with five additional countries that are just beginning to implement DREAMS interventions: Botswana, Cote D’Ivoire, Haiti, Namibia, Rwanda. With support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Girl Effect, Johnson & Johnson, Gilead Sciences, and ViiV Healthcare, DREAMS strives to achieve its mission through delivering evidence-based approaches that go beyond the health sector, while addressing the structural drivers that directly and indirectly increase girls’ HIV risk, including poverty, gender inequality, sexual violence, and lack of education.
WHY IT MATTERS: Girls account for nearly 75 percent of new HIV infections among the adolescent population in sub-Saharan Africa. The 10 DREAMS countries account for more than half of all the new HIV infections that occurred among adolescent girls and young women globally in 2016. On its website, DREAMS addresses its view on these facts succinctly and resolutely: “This must change.” The six organizations and agencies listed above are combining to infuse innovative and evidence-based ways of thinking, such as using specific focus-areas of action, to reduce HIV infections in these areas by 40 percent.
GRIHA PRAVESH
This partnership aims to establish a sustainable ecosystem of affordable housing for disadvantaged communities in India. Griha Pravesh combines the efforts of Saath Charitable Trust, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Brick Eagle, Indian Housing Federation (IHF), DBS Affordable Housing Pvt. Ltd., and Micro Housing Finance Corporation Ltd. (MHFC).
WHY IT MATTERS: About 85 percent of India’s urban population has a necessity for affordable housing. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 50 million units will be required to house a growing urban population. In order for the housing market to efficiently grow at scale with India’s increasing population, sustainable solutions must be actively sought out. By combining the resources, expertise, and efforts of these partners, Griha Pravesh is implementing sustainable solutions to the ever-growing need for affordable homes in India.
KOSMOS INNOVATION CENTER
The Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) was created by Kosmos Energy Ghana in 2016 to help Ghana build a brighter future by tackling some of the country’s key challenges. KIC harnesses the power of technology-savvy youth to bring innovation into priority development sectors by providing business training, mentorship, and other resources for young Ghanaian entrepreneurs. To get results that drive change, KIC uses a three-part approach: Collaboration, Incubation, and Acceleration. Kosmos Innovation Center is a partnership between DAI Global, Kosmos Energy, and Ghana’s Meltwater Entrepreneurship School of Technology.
WHY IT MATTERS: KIC operates by choosing an area of focus from one of Ghana’s many different sectors. In its first year, KIC is turning to agriculture – the largest sector in Ghana’s economy – where it will pursue and nurture the development of market-based solutions that address various development challenges. By utilizing innovative thinking from Ghana’s youth in order to improve key sectors within the country, KIC is simultaneously creating a platform that fosters inclusivity and collaboration, new problem-solving pathways, and improvement in development sectors.
LAKE KIVU COFFEE ALLIANCE
The partnership cultivates the re-emerging coffee industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Lake Kivu region and provides support and rehabilitation for victims of landmines and other explosive remnants of war. Lake Kivu Coffee Alliance is a partnership between the Polus Center for Social & Economic Development, Inc., Higher Grounds Coffee, Eastern Congo Initiative, and the Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement.
WHY IT MATTERS: The Lake Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been referred to “a paradise for coffee” due to its perfect location for harvesting coffee beans. Tragically, this region also overlaps with hazardous remnants of war, such as landmines and other explosives. Lasting conflict and the presence of these hazards have held the Lake Kivu region from prosperity for local communities. The aim of this initiative is to help encourage this effort to bring peace, stability, and better livelihoods to coffee farmers, their families, and local communities.
MIPFUTURO
MIPfuturo provides smallholder farmers in Guatemala access to a synthetic-free line of pesticide alternatives to combat pests and promote a healthier community and environment. MIPFuturo is a partnership between Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation, Agropecuaria Popoyán, Fintrac Inc., Universidad del Valle, and Genesis Empresarial.
WHY IT MATTERS: This synthetic-free line pesticide alternatives from MIPFuturo signals towards new ventures arising in agriculture. According to Thomas J. Steenburgh and Maggie Morse of The University of Virginia Darden School of Business, when the pesticide-free crops are accepted in export markets, Guatemalan farmers can earn three times the country’s minimum salary. The use of synthetic pesticides is known to reduce the selling price of the farmers’ crops. However, this partnership shows the farmers that there are opportunities in their communities that diverge from synthetic pesticides use, which allows them to increase the selling price of the crops. This partnership enables Popoyán to continue serving this market segment, farmers to continue improving their income and quality of life, and Partnering for Innovation to support a sustainable model to continue its path to long-term change, which in turn lends a hand to Feed the Future in its goal to end widespread hunger.
