Description

The private and philanthropic sectors play a critical role in addressing global humanitarian crises. The number of forcibly-displaced people has nearly doubled from 41 million at the end of 2010 to the latest estimate of 78.5 million in 2020. Latin America and the Caribbean is facing the largest movement of refugees and migrants in recent history, as more than 5.4 million refugees and migrants have fled Venezuela, seeking refuge and livelihood opportunities in the surrounding region. COVID-19 has further aggravated the already-dire living conditions of refugees and migrants, as well as causing widespread economic disruption and exacerbating protection concerns. The humanitarian sector is at a critical juncture: it must adapt to the changing landscape of crises. This Concordia Live, in partnership with USA for IOM, explored philanthropy, with its flexible and risk-tolerant capital, convening power, and strategic expertise, and how it plays a key role in this adaptation.
