Luis Alberto Lacalle actively participated in Concordia | The Americas in Miami on May 12-13, 2016 serving as a conversation lead in a discussion on democracy in the region. In addition, he contributed to in-depth conversations on a range of pressing issues currently affecting the Americas.

“We are confident that President Lacalle’s intimate knowledge of the region will be a great asset to our Leadership Council and we welcome his insight to aid our efforts in promoting and enabling public-private partnerships.” Concordia’s Chairman of the Board, Nicholas M. Logothetis, commented.

Lacalle served as President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay from 1990-1995. His administration put in place reforms to strengthen Uruguay’s economy and encouraged a free market program. He also worked with the Presidents of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina to establish Mercosur with the goal of promoting free trade and the movement of goods, people, and currency across the sub-regional bloc.

“President Lacalle’s insights into Latin American politics elevated the quality of the discussion at our Summit on the Americas. We are thrilled he will contribute his expertise by serving on our Leadership Council,” Concordia’s Chairman and CEO, Matthew A. Swift, remarked.

Lacalle has a long history in Uruguayan politics, having served as a lawyer, Member of Congress, and Vice President of the Senate. Prior to his career in politics, he worked in journalism in various capacities.  Lacalle is also member of the Club de Madrid, Cárter Center, and Friends of Israel.
