Serving as President of the Republic of Slovenia from 2007 until 2012, Türk brings with him invaluable insight into European politics and the critical role of partnerships in developing the global community.

At the 2017 Concordia Annual Summit, Türk co-chaired a Strategic Dialogue on Innovative Financing Solutions to Achieve the SDGs. During this dialogue, Türk spoke about the growing importance of water in global development and international security. He noted his work on chairing the UN High-Level Panel of Water and Peace, which recently released a report highlighting the need for greater innovation and cooperation in achieving sustainable management of water resources.

In 2016, Concordia interviewed President Türk—who was then a candidate in the running for UN Secretary General—on the importance of partnerships in achieving the UN agenda. During this interview, Türk commented: “Partnerships are essential to international governance […] Regional organizations, civil society, business, and academia have become much more influential than in the past—which is described as horizontal cooperation. The UN doesn’t act as a top-down system, but rather working side by side with other partners.”

Upon accepting the invitation to join Concordia’s Leadership Council, Türk stated: “Having participated over the last two years at the Concordia Annual Summit, it is an honor for me to now serve among the many distinguished individuals on the esteemed Leadership Council. I look forward to bringing my experience to the table as we work together to advance the power of partnerships.”

Concordia’s Co-Founders, Matthew A. Swift and Nicholas M. Logothetis, remarked: “President Türk’s unparalleled work in the human rights and diplomacy space, through his position as Former President of the Republic of Slovenia and as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs (2000 -2005), will contribute immensely to Concordia’s mission of facilitating partnerships for social impact. We are delighted that he has accepted our invitation to join the Leadership Council, and we look forward to drawing on his deep knowledge and expertise.”
