2021 PROGRAMMING PARTNER

Concordia and Americares announce a Programming Partnership aimed at driving an action-oriented approach to implementing disaster preparedness initiatives at the local level.

Americares is a health-focused relief and development organization that saves lives and improves health for people affected by poverty or disaster. Each year, Americares reaches an average of 90 countries and all 50 U.S. states with life-changing health programs, medicine and medical supplies. Building on a relationship between Concordia and Americares that began in 2016, the new partnership will draw on insights and expertise from across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in order to develop a framework that translates existing global commitments on disaster preparedness to sustainable local policies. This framework will identify clear action to be adopted by local leaders in order to drive preparedness and resilience initiatives. The partnership will also seek to identify obstacles to scaling preparedness approaches through case study analysis and discussions with thought leaders in the field.

Set within the framework of Concordia’s Global Health & Emergency Response Programming Pipeline, this year-round partnership will engage the communities of both organizations through action-oriented programming. Concordia’s Global Health & Emergency Response Pipeline focuses on issues ranging from international epidemics and equitable health access to global aid delivery and disaster preparedness.

This past March, Concordia and Americares hosted a roundtable discussion as part of Global Partnerships Week 2018 in Washington, D.C., titled From Rhetoric to Action: Moving the Dial on Disaster Preparedness. The roundtable convened high-profile leaders across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to collectively identify clear steps towards achieving disaster preparedness through prioritization of programming, policy, and investment.

These discussions were further developed at the InterAction Forum 2018, where Concordia again hosted a roundtable with Americares focused on establishing a framework that translates existing global commitments on preparedness to sustainable local policies for everyday emergencies and major disasters. The roundtable emphasized the need for these policies to be federally supported, state managed, and locally implemented, and explored the importance of understanding the risks and hazards that individuals and communities face in order to offer solutions that are within the local actor’s means to adopt.

These critical, action-oriented conversations are shaping the direction of Concordia’s focus with Americares on disaster preparedness throughout 2018, and will inform the engagement at the 2018 Concordia Annual Summit.
