Concordia is honored to announce that The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull, former 29th Prime Minister of Australia, has joined its Leadership Council. With a distinguished career in governance and business affairs, Mr. Turnbull brings invaluable expertise to Concordia’s mission of fostering cross-sector collaboration to address global challenges.
While Prime Minister, he reformed Australia’s personal income tax, education, and childcare systems, oversaw the legislation of same-sex marriage, and announced the construction of Snowy Hydro 2.0. Prime Minister Turnbull also embarked on the most significant peacetime investment in Australian defense capabilities and set out Australia’s first national strategy. Globally, he has played a leading role in reviving the Trans-Pacific Partnership after the United States withdrew, and has struck deals with US Presidents Obama and Trump to accept refugees who tried to arrive in Australia illegally by boat.
In his career as a young lawyer, Prime Minister Turnbull successfully defended former M15 agent Peter Wright against the British government in the 1986 “Spycatcher” trial. He then entered the business world, running his investment banking firm for a decade before joining Goldman Sachs as a partner in 1997. Mr. Turnbull also co-founded OzEmail Limited, the first Australian tech company to be listed on the NASDAQ. Outside of politics, Mr. Turnbull is an investor and advisor to many Australian technology businesses. He is also President of the International Hydropower Association, where he speaks and writes on a range of issues, including cyber security, geopolitics, and renewable energy. He also publishes his own podcast Defending Democracy.
“Concordia, our Leadership Council, and our community are excited to welcome Prime Minister Turnbull to our community,” said Matthew A. Swift, Co-Founder, Chairman & CEO of Concordia. “His capacity for leadership, deep knowledge of international cooperation, and strategic vision will be invaluable to our work.”
