Serving as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, and Chairperson of the African Union from July 2004 to January 2006, President Obasanjo brings with him unparalleled insight into the political landscape both in Nigeria and West Africa as a whole.

As the first Nigerian leader to hand power over to a democratically-elected president, President Obasanjo has played a critical, historic role in shaping the country’s political dynamics. His steadfast commitment to political activism, and his ability to remain a voice of reason for an economically-prosperous Nigeria, are admired and respected by many leaders around the world.

At last year’s 2017 Annual Summit, Concordia was honored to provide a platform for President Obasanjo to share his insight into the challenges and opportunities facing West Africa, including issues spanning the role of the growing African population in economic development to navigating extremist threats from Boko Haram. This year, as Concordia looks to build out its presence on the African continent, President Obasanjo will provide tremendous value to the development and legitimacy of its convenings in the region.

Upon accepting the invitation to join Concordia’s Leadership Council, President Obasanjo commented: “My decision to join the Leadership Council at a time when I am disengaging from various global organizations to focus on my Presidential Library is borne out of my genuine admiration for the work that Concordia is doing to promote positive social impact across the world, but particularly in Africa.”

Concordia’s Co-Founders, Matthew A. Swift and Nicholas M. Logothetis, remarked: “We are delighted to welcome President Obasanjo to Concordia’s Leadership Council. His unwavering commitment to the people of Nigeria, and West Africa as a whole, is demonstrated by his unparalleled military and public service, and we know that his wisdom, humility, and presence will help guide our organization’s growth and evolution.”
