Concordia is shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Sebastián Piñera, Former President of Chile and Former Concordia Leadership Council Member, this week.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. President Piñera first joined Concordia’s Leadership Council in 2016 following a successful intervention at our 2014 Annual Summit in New York City, parallel to the UN General Assembly,” commented Matthew Swift and Nicholas Logothetis, Concordia’s Co-Founders. They went on to say: “Since that time, we’ve worked closely together on a number of important issues impacting Chile and the entire region as part of our Americas and Amazonas initiatives. Most recently, President Piñera participated in our inaugural Amazonas Summit in Ecuador and demonstrated his dedication to creating nature-based market-led solutions to protecting the Amazon rainforest. Our condolences go out to his wife, Cecilia Morel, and four children.”
President Piñera served two non-consecutive terms as President of Chile between 2010 and 2022. The first was between 2010 and 2014 and the second was between 2018 and 2022. He acquired a reputation for driving economic growth, reducing unemployment, and advancing the values of freedom and democracy across Latin America. Alongside his political career, he established numerous organizations for the public good. Most notably, he founded Avanza Chile to contribute ideas to public policy and expand liberty and opportunities for the Chilean people. President Piñera also had extensive leadership experience in the private sector.
A longtime supporter of Concordia, President Piñera’s initial involvement was at the 2014 Annual Summit (watch our videos to find out what brought him to Concordia and to listen to the panel on Economic Trends & New Opportunities in Latin America). He also participated in the 2016 Annual Summit and the inaugural Concordia Amazonas Summit last year in Ecuador.
Concordia extends its heartfelt sympathies to President Piñera’s family and friends during this difficult period.
