Concordia is delighted to announce the appointment of the former President of the Government of Spain, H.E Felipe González, to the Concordia Leadership Council.

As the longest-serving President of the Government of Spain (1982-1996) and with extensive experience working within the European Union, former President Gonzalez is an invaluable expert on EU affairs and foreign relations. The former President has demonstrated a commitment to enhance access to education and social security, as well as implement unemployment protection. With a law degree from the University of Sevilla, he worked as a labor lawyer before fully dedicating himself to politics. In 1962 he joined the Socialist Youths and in 1974 he was elected Secretary General of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Party). In 1977 the party is finally legalized and Felipe Gonzalez is able to run for the first general democratic elections in Spain.

The appointment comes before the 2023 Concordia Europe Summit, taking place June 15-16 in Madrid, Spain. The Concordia Europe Summit will bring together 75 decision makers for a set of high-level closed-door conversations centered on the theme of Democracy, Security & Geopolitical Risk, with a focus on cyber and energy security and diplomatic tools. Through a Concilium format, key leaders will be positioned in front of an intimate, dynamic audience with the aim of presenting key recommendations to Spanish and EU Leadership as Spain assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1, 2023.

“As a committed statesman and invaluable expert on EU affairs, former President Gonzalez’s insight and experience will be crucial as Concordia looks to expand its reach in, and commitment to, the region,” commented Concordia’s CEO & Co-Founder, Matthew Swift. “As we gear up to the 2023 Europe Summit in June, this appointment will play an important role in ensuring that Concordia is well placed to deliver the maximum impact as Spain assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.”
