Description

The Russian war against Ukraine has exposed serious vulnerability in global energy and food security, leading to shortages and price surges. Policy makers and companies are grappling with how to respond to the crisis, while maintaining the strategic priorities of aggressive action to combat climate change and nature loss.

In the short term, greenhouse emissions will increase as governments rightly scramble to replace Russian natural gas with alternative supply, including increased coal utilization. The pending food shortages will also test the capacity for humanitarian food aid derived from shifting global sources. At the same time, the war in Ukraine has highlighted the risk of continued global dependence on fossil fuel energy sources from volatile regions and the need to build greater resilience in our food systems. Now is the moment for companies, governments, and civil society to come together to reinforce their collective commitment to build a more sustainable, resilient future focused on energy and food security.

This Concordia Live, hosted and moderated by Pollination, explored how we can build resilience to future shocks and bolster our food and energy security by investing in the green solutions which are already available and scalable, including zero carbon energy and regenerative agriculture. We covered how companies in the food and energy sector can lead the way by setting serious climate change goals and realistic action plans in order to deliver them and accelerate the transition towards a net-zero, climate-resilient future.
