In honor of International Women’s Day (IWD) and Global Partnerships Week (GPW), BNY Mellon, the YWCA, and Concordia hosted a panel discussion which advocated for the social, economic, and political empowerment of women globally.

In situations of crisis and conflict, women and girls often face critical and disproportionate challenges to their safety and wellbeing. Stemming from the Syrian refugee crisis, the unique needs of women and girls must be addressed by leaders from countries of origin and host countries alike. This session aimed to identify opportunities for collaboration between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to protect and empower women and girls in crisis situations and conflict zones both at home and abroad. Topics touched on several of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, with an acute focus on economic empowerment, protection from gender-based violence, and maternal health and reproductive rights. In addition to recent policy stances on emergency response efforts and international development programs for women and girls, participants also explored the current administration’s promotion of entrepreneurship and the potential shifts in parental leave policy.
