Peter Matlare is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Absa Group Limited, responsible for the group’s twelve African operations outside of South Africa and is an Executive Director on the Absa Group Limited Board.
Peter has acquired a wealth of experience from his time in the financial services, mining, media, public broadcasting, telecommunications and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors and has worked internationally but has a deep knowledge and abiding passion for African markets.
Peter began his career with The Urban Foundation, a South African think-tank and later joined Citibank, where he worked in their international and South African offices.
Peter then moved to Primedia, a leading South African media business, where he was Chief Operating Officer. Thereafter, Peter joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the country’s public broadcaster, as the Group Chief Executive Officer where he is credited for turning the business to profit and significantly expanding the entity’s local content.
Following his tenure with the public broadcaster, Peter joined the Vodacom Group, an African mobile communications operator, where he was the executive responsible for strategy formulation and business development.
Prior to his current role within the Absa Group, Peter held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Tiger Brands Limited, the largest food manufacturer in Africa and a manufacturer and marketer of a wide range of FMCG products, where he presided over the company’s expansion into new markets across the continent.
Peter holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in political science from the University of Plymouth (U.K.) and a Masters degree in Southern African Studies from the University of York (U.K.).
