Mikael Ribbenvik Cassar is the Director General of the Swedish Migration Agency (SMA) since June 1, 2017.
He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) from University of Lund, Sweden, and has more than 20 years of experience in the field of human rights and migration.
Mr Ribbenvik Cassar served as Director for Legal Affairs of the SMA between 2008 and 2013 responsible for internal jurisprudence. From 2013 to 2016 he was Director of Operations and Deputy Director General responsible for managing and improving standards of performance within the operation of the SMA.
Mikael Ribbenvik Cassar is also the Chair of the Management Board of The European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA, an agency of the European Union mandated with supporting Member States in applying the package of EU laws that governs asylum and international protection. The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) replaced the former agency European Asylum Support Office (EASO) in 2022. Mikael Ribbenvik Cassar has been a board member of EASO since 2013 and served as Deputy Management Board Chair 2019-2021. He has been the Management Board Chair since March 2021.
