Mara M. Burr is the Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative (DAUSTR) for South and Central Asian Affairs where she has responsibilities for all trade and economic issues with the South and Central Asian countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Maldives and the U.S. trade relationship with Iraq. Ms. Burr works with Members of Congress and staff to brief them on trade and investment matters in this region. Ms. Burr is responsible for outreach to the Trade Advisory Committees and coordination with the other agencies through the Trade Policy Staff Committee and subcommittees, on all trade and economic issues for this region. Ms. Burr is responsible for relations with U.S. state government officials, including assisting in briefings on trade and investment issues for trade delegations and in addressing trade and investment concerns.

Previously Ms. Burr was the DAUSTR for Environment and Natural Resources from 2004 to 2010. The Office of Environment and Natural Resources is responsible for the development and implementation of trade and environmental policy at USTR. Prior to joining USTR Ms. Burr was Special Counsel for International Trade Policy for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI). Ms. Burr was in private practice from 1996 to 2001, practicing international trade and customs law in Washington, DC.

Ms. Burr is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, LL.M. (international and comparative law) (Dean’s Certificate), Hamline University School of Law (JD) (Distinguished Alumna 2006-2007), and the University of St. Thomas (BA).
