H.E. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera

President, Republic of Malawi

Bio Current as of August 5, 2022

Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is the President of the Republic of Malawi. He was sworn into office in June 2020. Prior to his election, he was President of the Malawi Assemblies of God for over 25 years until he entered frontline politics in 2013, becoming a Member of Parliament and Malawi’s Leader of Opposition in 2014. Chakwera then contested for the Presidency in 2019, but when his election monitors unearthed evidence of widespread incidents of electoral fraud, he filed a Constitional Court petition against Malawi’s electoral authorities.

After months of litigation and nationwide protests from disgruntled voters, Malawi’s Constitutional Court unanimously ruled in favor of Chakwera’s petition and declared the elections null and void, a ruling which was unanimously upheld by Malawi’s Supreme Court. A Fresh Presidential Election was held in June 2020, from which Chakwera emerged the clear winner with nearly 60% of the votes, making Malawi the first country in the world to legally overturn an election and hold a fresh one that resulted in the defeat of the incumbent by an opposition candidate.

Believing that the fraud that prevailed in the 2019 elections was only the tip of the corruption iceberg in Malawi’s state institutions, President Chakwera has made the fight against corruption a top priority of his Administration, and is known around the world for his boldness in strengthening governance institutions and holding high ranking officials of the Government who are corruption suspects accountable.
