Dalyn Woody is a Senior at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, which was the subject of a 60 Minutes featured story because of its unique culture that emphasizes student leadership as a cornerstone of their success.  Dalyn holds the highest student leadership position at St. Benedict’s; Senior Group Leader.  Dalyn climbed the leadership ranks, beginning with the position of Captain of his freshman “Backpacking Project” Appalachian Trail hiking group, leading his group of classmates through the 55-mile trek.  In each of his next two years he served as a Freshman Counselor.  As the Senior Group Leader, Dalyn is responsible for setting the tone of the school each day, leading Convocation – the daily school-wide meeting – as well as overseeing the seven other Senior Leaders who report directly to him, and the 18 Group Leaders who are responsible for the attendance, academic progress and behavior of students from grades seven to twelve.  Dalyn is a talented student-athlete, who will lead the school’s wrestling team for a second consecutive year as a Captain, while also running track during the spring season.  His senior year will include involvement with the school’s Admissions Team and continuing his service in the National Honor Society.  Dalyn will apply to the United States Naval Academy and Georgia Institute of Technology, where he plans to major in Engineering and pursue a career in mechanical engineering.
