The P3 Impact Award recognizes strong cross-sector collaboration that features public, private, nonprofit, or non-governmental organizations and addresses societal problems. It allows us to connect trends and highlight partnership best practices so that we can deliver impact across our world, explained José W. Fernandez, Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, U.S. Department of State. He turned the stage over to Dorothy McAuliffe, Special Representative for Global Partnerships at the Department of State, Hanne Dalmut, Senior Director of Partnerships at Concordia, and Mary Margaret Frank, Senior Associate Dean, University of Virginia Darden School of Business, and Concordia Advisor, who each provided a brief overview of the annual award and its impact on global partnering best practices. Following the award introduction, each of the five P3 finalists was to show a brief video and answer questions from the panel of judges to help determine the 2022 P3 Impact Award Winner: Donnica Hawes-Saunders, Senior Manager of Global Strategic Partnerships and Civil Engagement at Philip Morris International; Elyse Cohen, Vice President of Social Impact & Inclusion, Rare Beauty, and President of the Rare Impact Fund; Funlola Otukoya, Investment Analyst at the McKnight Foundation; and Hector Mujica, Head of Economic Opportunity at Google.Org and Concordia Advisor.

School of the World Community Schools works to enhance the capacity of community educational systems in Guatemala. Children have attended school in facilities not conducive to learning and lacking sufficient supplies. Working with the community from the ground up, School the World has created a three-way partnership with mayors, community, and local business to raise funding and labor for school improvements that revitalize facilities and help improve learning. Kate Curran, Founder & CEO of School the World, noted that enlisting parents into the process helped foster a feeling of belonging and ownership for the community. They treat every community as an opportunity for partnership and work directly for the benefit of the community itself.

Our wasteful, throwaway culture hits the poorest first on Timor-Leste, where plastics threaten the country’s tourism and economic development. The Plastic Solutions Alliance aims to to minimize the use and improper disposal of plastic, which induces the risk of natural disasters and climate change, and to establish a competitive recycling value chain. Clement Albano, Circular Economy Manager at Mercy Corps, explained how the program builds capacity for small recyclers through equipment grants and education. He also noted that we often consider waste to be someone else’s problem but this partnership provides an opportunity to change that mentality.

The world is full of economic imbalance. Nearly 200 million people live on less than $2 a day, the definition of global poverty, while a rarefied few live in unimaginable luxury. The goal of the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation is to streamline the process of cross-border trade, making it simpler, faster, and more cost-effective. Paul Fekete, Senior International Trade Advisor for USAID, highlighted the large number of stakeholders already at the table, including some large multinational companies. The Alliance focuses on ensuring that businesses and governments speak to each other with a common vernacular for progress.

SAMRIDH aims to make quality and affordable healthcare affordable for everyone, improving healthcare services for vulnerable communities. Partners are focused on maximizing efforts towards building an inclusive healthcare system for India. Himanshu Sikka, Project Director for SAMRIDH Healthcare Blended Finance Facility, and Chief Strategy and Diversification Officer and Practice Lead-Health at IPE Global Limited, described how the partnership began in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which gave them immediate insight into its importance. Sikka noted that a crucial component of partnership is understanding both the strengths that individual partners bring to the table and directing them appropriately.

Through Leads Mujer, women entrepreneurs in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras can access targeted training to make better-informed decisions and grow their businesses. Jonathan Fantini-Porter, Executive Director, The Partnership for Central America, explained that the organization is focused on creating one million jobs in the region by empowering and enabling women around skilling and community building. Sustained performance requires strong systems and a strong culture, shared vision, and transparency.
