Tiffany Cross, Host of MSNBC’s Cross Connection, welcomed to the stage Amb. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Representative of the United States to the United Nations, for a discussion on the United Nations (UN) and the role of the U.S. In an eventful year, the Ambassador explained that food insecurity has been exacerbated by war on top of the already existing issues of climate change and COVID-19. Food insecurity is both a global and local issue; the international community must offer food relief in the short term and develop more capacity over the long term.
Cross pressed Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield to imagine the future of the UN. The Ambassador noted that the UN needs to do some soul searching on how to reform to better fit its intended purpose. The international community has come together to condemn Russia’s actions, she explained, but Russia remains on the Security Council.
Turning to the U.S., Cross asked the Ambassador to explain how she sees America’s role in addressing democracy even though we have our own problems at home. Thomas-Greenfield countered that our democracy remains strong despite the fraying around the edges. Our strength, she continued, is in our willingness to acknowledge, examine, and rectify our weaknesses. We are rooted in democracy and our strength is democracy, and it will not be so easily defeated.
