Congressman Andy Kim, U.S. Representative, D-New Jersey, spoke about representing a district that voted for the Republican ticket in 2020. He is one of only a few members of Congress who represent a district that split its ticket. His challenge is to find common ground among constituents whose political views differ from his own.
Congressman Kim explored the idea that renewing our commonality and shared truth will help restore faith in institutions in the U.S. and around the world. Re-engaging will help find the mutual goals that are currently obscured by partisan politics. He implored listeners to remember that how we treat each other as human beings is as important as policy goals and ideas. We exist together beyond politics, and he argued that objectives and conduct must both be taken into consideration.
I, for one, believe that this is a time when we need to reinvest and re-engage in our institutions, because they are the means by which we reassert a sense of commonality and shared purpose.
