The Amazon rainforest is a testament to the complexity and interconnectedness of our planet’s natural systems – a vast network of species, ecosystems, and cultures that benefit all living things worldwide. The Amazon, for example, generates up to 50% of regional rainfall, crucial for sustaining moisture levels across the whole of South America, and supporting diverse biomes and economic activities that serve the world. However, we face a dire challenge: large portions of the Amazon are at risk of mass mortality events due to climate change and land use disturbances. In addition to the environmental impact, we risk losing the Amazon’s profound socioeconomic and cultural significance.
The 2024 Concordia Amazonas Summit, which took place on July 9-13, immersed participants in the rainforest, deepening their understanding of the Amazon’s invaluable resources and inspiring a renewed commitment to safeguarding this irreplaceable natural treasure. Attendees from the Concordia network explored ways to protect biodiversity, encourage indigenous entrepreneurship, mobilize climate finance, create a credible and replicable carbon market, and forge meaningful partnerships around innovative and scalable ideas. The call to action stemming from this convening is the creation of market-led, nature-driven solutions to protect the vital ecosystems of the rainforest.
