Building on Concordia’s previous programming focused on the African continent and with the aim of furthering Concordia’s footprint in the region, the 2022 Africa Initiative will consist of high-level, invitation-only dinners taking place in Cape Town, South Africa and Washington, D.C.
With a focus on South Africa, the Cape Town discussion will center on energy security, falling under Concordia’s Environmental Sustainability programming theme. Topics will include the energy crisis, the impact of rolling blackouts on public unrest and economic growth, and the steps needed to decarbonize the economy and accelerate the transition to renewables.
Taking place alongside the 2022 US-Africa Summit, Concordia will host a dinner in Washington, D.C. focused on exploring best practices for healthcare that help strengthen healthcare systems across the African continent. Falling under Concordia’s Health Opportunities & Challenges programming theme, the conversation will focus on lessons learned from recent public health crises and how these lessons can be applied to other challenges in healthcare like the increasing burden of noncommunicable diseases across the continent. This conversation will convene government leaders, ministers of health, the private sector, and foundations to discuss how we can work together for a healthier tomorrow.
The conversations—and the network convened—at both dinners will inform Concordia’s next steps pertaining to a larger Africa Initiative in 2023, which will provide an international partnership platform through which to highlight the approaches, models, and priorities of African leaders and identify opportunities for collaboration with the international community.
