Joel Klein was Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, the largest public school system in the United States, from August 2002 to January 2011. Prior to his appointment as Chancellor by Mayor Bloomberg, Mr. Klein was Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice from July 1997 to September 2000. In 1997 the Senate confirmed his appointment as Acting Assistant Attorney General, by President Clinton. Klein also served as Deputy White House Counsel to President Clinton.

After stepping down from the Department of Education, Klein became the Chief Executive Officer of the education division of News Corp, reporting to Chairman Rupert Murdoch. Klein also serves as the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief U.S. Liaison Officer of Bertelsmann Inc., a global media conglomerate. He also serves as a Director of Teach For America, Inc., and has previously served as a Director of Barnesandnoble.com, Inc.
