Botella was born in Madrid. She has a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and is part of the Senior Civil Administrators of the State. As a public servant, she has worked in the Ministry of Interior, Civil Government of La Rioja, Ministry of Public Works, Valladolid Tax Office and Ministry of Finance.
In 2003 she was elected as a member of the City Council of Madrid, has been Second Deputy Mayor and has held the Government Delegations Employment and Social Services (2003-2007), the Environment, Department which depended on the basic services of the City (2007-2011) and Environment and Mobility (June 2011-December 2011).
On December 27, 2011 she was appointed Mayor of Madrid in an extraordinary session of the municipal council of Madrid; a position she held until June 2015.
As Mayor, she was President of the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid, co-chaired the Union of Latin American Capital Cities and chaired the POLIS network of cities and European regions for finding innovative transportation solutions. She was a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Museo del Prado, the Lyric Theatre (Royal Theater) Foundation and National Heritage.
She has been President of Honor of the International Association of Peace Messengers and founder and Executive President of the Foundation Make and Integra Foundation.
For three years she commented in a briefing of Tele 5. The chain has collaborated on the book “Once Upon a Time … the best commented children’s stories” and “Christmas Tales”, and has published the book “My eight years at Moncloa “(Plaza and Janes, 2004).
She is a militant of the Popular Party since its founding. She is part of the Steering Committee of the Popular Party in Madrid since December 2004. She has been Executive Secretary of Social Action (2004-2008) and Sector Action (2008-2011). Since 2008, she has been a member of the National Executive Committee of the Popular Party.
At present, since she left the City of Madrid in June 2015, she is Executive President of the Integra Foundation.
She is married since 1977 to José María Aznar, Prime Minister of Spain (1996-2004). They have three children and six grandchildren.


Nació en Madrid. Es licenciada en Derecho por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y pertenece por oposición al Cuerpo Superior de Administradores Civiles del Estado. Como funcionara del Estado ha trabajado en el Ministerio del Interior, Gobierno Civil de la Rioja, Ministerio de Obras Públicas, Delegación de Hacienda de Valladolid y Ministerio de Hacienda.
En el año 2003 fue elegida Concejal del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, ha sido Segunda Teniente de Alcalde y ha ocupado las Delegaciones de Gobierno de Empleo y Servicios Sociales (2003-2007), de Medio Ambiente, concejalía de la que dependían los servicios básicos del Ayuntamiento (2007-2011) y de Medio Ambiente y Movilidad (junio 2011-diciembre 2011).
El 27 de diciembre de 2011 fue investida Alcaldesa en sesión extraordinaria del Pleno del Ayuntamiento de Madrid; cargo que desempeñó hasta junio de 2015.
Como Alcaldesa, fue Presidenta de la Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid, copresidió la Unión de Ciudades Capitales Iberoamericanas y presidió la Red POLIS de ciudades y regiones Europeas para la búsqueda de soluciones innovadoras del transporte. Formó parte de los Patronatos del Museo del Prado, de la Fundación Teatro Lírico (Teatro Real) y de Patrimonio Nacional.
Ha sido Presidenta de Honor Internacional de la asociación Mensajeros de la Paz y fundadora y Presidenta Ejecutiva de la Fundación Realiza y de la Fundación Integra.
Durante tres años realizó comentarios de actualidad en un informativo de la cadena Tele 5. Ha colaborado en el libro “Érase una vez… los mejores cuentos infantiles comentados” y “Cuentos de Navidad”, y ha publicado el libro “Mis ocho años en Moncloa” (Plaza y Janés, 2004).
Es militante del Partido Popular desde su fundación. Forma parte del Comité de Dirección del Partido Popular de Madrid desde diciembre de 2004. Ha sido Secretaria Ejecutiva de Acción Social (2004-2008) y de Acción Sectorial (2008-2011). Desde el año 2008 es miembro del Comité Ejecutivo Nacional del Partido Popular.
En la actualidad, desde que dejó el Ayuntamiento de Madrid en junio de 2015, es Presidenta Ejecutiva de la Fundación Integra.
Está casada desde 1977 con José María Aznar, Presidente del Gobierno de España (1996-2004). Tienen tres hijos y seis nietos.
